Why China
There are very few places in the world that can make products as complex as ours. Our products are designed to feel simple to use, and the engineering inside them is anything but simple. Making them well takes a rare combination of:

Large-scale quality testing and environmental testing
Competitive costs and modern factories
Only a handful of manufacturers anywhere can meet all of these at once, and most of them are in the world's manufacturing hubs, such as China and Taiwan.
Making a product means a vast number of components, skills and processes all coming together in one place at the same time. As this New York Times article explains, even Apple, with all its resources, has found it very hard to build products at scale outside these hubs.
