Will my phone case work with MAGFAST?

Most cases work, and a quick test will tell you in about five seconds.

The paperclip test

Hold a paperclip against the back of your case.

  • It sticks firmly: your case has strong magnets and is ready for wireless magnetic charging.

  • It slides off: your case needs magnets. A magnetic case, such as Clear Cut Case, adds them.

Many iPhones have magnets built in, and some cases cancel them. Most Android phones have wireless charging but no magnets, so they need a magnetic case.

Cases that work best

MAGFAST wireless magnetic charging follows the MagSafe and Qi2 standards, so any phone or case that supports those standards works with MAGFAST, and the reverse is also true.

Cases that can cause trouble

  • Thick or rugged cases, such as waterproof and heavy-duty designs, put extra distance between your phone and the charger. The magnets hold less firmly, and charging can slow down or stop.

  • Metal. A metal plate, ring, wallet or PopSocket-style grip between your phone and the charger can block charging and make the metal warm. Move it away from the charging area.

  • Cases with wallet slots that hold cards behind the phone can get in the way too. Cards are also sensitive to magnets (see Are MAGFAST chargers safe near my credit cards?).

  • Samsung phones with NFC. Magnetic cases can interfere with NFC on some Samsung models, because of where the antenna sits. This happens with any magnetic case, and adjusting the position usually solves it.

If your case is too thick

You can always charge with a cable, as usual. A thinner magnetic case such as Clear Cut Case also lets you enjoy snap-to-charge wireless charging.
